Jack

Jack is 9.5years old. he is a tall boy in his class. Also he has reddish hair.

Jack's family
Jack has an old sister at the school called Isabelle. Her mother Jane Forest cared about him so much. Once she notice Jack has something unusually of study, she will contact with teachers. Jack's father always bring him out to join some sports. So Jack loves his father most. He write if i was gonna go some place i'd go with dad, he knows every thing and takes me to all the good games and he feels safe unless he is with his father

Jack's friends
Jack is a talkative students. He got lots of friends in classroom. But if they are in the same group, they will disturb each other.

What Jack likes?
Jack enjoy reading Paul Jennings and Andy Griffiths because they are funny.he can interpret their humour in this own way. And he told teachers and mother, he is reading Harry Potter books, but what he knows is just the things happened in the Harry Potter movie. So no one trust he is actually reading the books.
Also he enjoy pay attention though dong whacky things, such as shaving off all his hair for Canteen.
Jack loves sports especially football. He always want to go out for sports even it is literacy learning time or home study time. He loves arts too, cause he can do lots of interesting stuffs in this class.
Jack loves animal especially spider. He know girls hate spider. But in his mind it is funny when spider run away. He think spider aren't animals, they are insects, he want to be one.
Jack's favorite thing at home is his bedroom "cause thats where mum makes me keep all my stuff.

what Jack hates?
Jack hate to sit quietly in the classroom and do what teachers told him. He hates to do all the boring things. And he do not like it when he have to be in groups where Ms Jones says and not with his friends.

Jack in the class
heedless of classroom etiquette, Jack tends to irritate teachers by calling out in class and offering irrelevant suggestions. He tends to operate according to his own logic rather than from any desire to attract attention, although he is leaning to play the class clown by apprenticing himself to Simon, Jack and Ahmet.Jack is considered funny but can be aggressive, particularly if he doesn't agree with the umpire's decision.

Strengths in Literacy:

Jack has the very low strengths in literacy. His VELS level in Term 4 2009 is 1.7. But as a year 4 students I think he should get 2.25. Compare all his progression points, his reading is the best part of literacy skills, his speaking and listening are the worst parts. Jack has a very low start and did not prove a lot during 2009. Because he always cannot focus on the class. It is very hard for teachers to understand, help and teach him. Also he is a very self-centered student. Unless the class is about a few parts he interested in, he would like to join in. Otherwise he is just disturbed the class. He wants to have the very active and funny class. He hates to sit in the class to do literacy practice. That’s why his grammer skill of 2009 is only 1.

Interests:

Jack like to read reading Paul Jennings and Andy Griffiths because they are funny. Also he loves sports. He always want to have sports in school.

Literacy Preferences:

Jack does not like to read books unless they fit for his taste of funny. He hates writing things. Low grammer skills. He cannot concentrate in class and have very strange thoughts, so very low skill of speaking and listening.

Child as Literacy:

Jack is not a good literacy learner. He never wants to read the book. Even his teachers and parents give power to him; he just read the book which he thinks is interested. So he did not get enough reading practice to prove his reading skill.

Also he likes to do the active stuffs in the class. He hates just sit there and write something. So his writing skill has not been proved a lot during 2009.

For his speaking and listening skills, Jack is a talkative student, but he has many very strange thoughts. What he said is not help his literacy learning at all, even only disturbed the class. He is hard to focus on what teachers told him. So it is even hard for teacher to teach and test him.

His grammer also not good.

So Jack is a very intractable student as literacy learner.

Relationships with others in the school/centre

Jack has two friends Simon and Ahmet. But Jack’s mother did not like them. She think they have the bad influence on him and distracting him form learning at the best of his ability. But teacher think Jack may learn from one another since he mix with a variety of children.

As Jack is a student want to catch others’ attention. He should have many friends in class.

Physical environment:

The class is presentable. Students have the good controlled in the classroom. But Jack is a talkative student, so he always disturbs the class.

The curriculum

Literacy and numeracy classes are the main session in this school. But also it has PE and arts.

Actions & Time-Line

Evaluation procedures

1

Reading and writing

Have the interesting to read the book and able to gain the useful information from the book without strange thoughts.

Jack can read. He is just not interested in reading. He is a very personal thoughts child. In Myread it saidYet for all but the 5-10% of students who have intellectual, sensory or learning disabilities the issue is one of underperformance rather than ability.(Myread, beliefs, all students can be successful readers)As he read, he just wants to find some common like funny things from the book. So the first thing is make him notice from the book he can gain lots of useful information in other area.

Jack is the student who wants to catch the attention. So if he feels this is an ILP for him, he should be happy and enjoy the work.

Jack loves sports especially basketball. So the story about sports can gain his attention for longer time.

Also as Jack love sports, he will have rich information about this area. So it will easier for him to do some writing practice. Resource using “basketball buddies”

first month

Jack will try to be used to sit down and do stuffs in the class. It is a very important step for him to learn how to study in the class.

2

Reading and Writing

By writing practice to improve his writing skill and his grammar. Also start to give him some books he do not interested. Try to build up his interesting to other area. At least not hate them.

Jack cannot only read sports books. He should build up the interesting to books. Also Jack’s grammar should be proved. So writing practice is necessary.

Jack is good at making up stories, unfortunately he just get some strange opinions. So Jack need to do some writing practice instead of free writing.

Jack read the book then fined the beginning, middle and end part of the story. Then retell the story using his own words. By this way, jack can practice his writing skill and grammar but will not writing some strange things. Resource using “the night I followed the dog”

second month

Jack will be used to read different types of books and he will prove his grammar and writing skills.

3

Listening and speaking

Make Jack know how to listen to others to gain information and tell others the information he got. In VELS it said “understanding of author’s purpose for writing a text; for example, to narrate, to inform, and of how well the text achieved its purpose” (VELS, progression points, level 3, reading)

Jack is not good at listen to others. So it is also very important for him to prove his listen skill. Listening and speaking are two parts cannot be separated.

Jack hate read books but interested in watching movies.

By watching the movie, Jack can gain the information. Then ask him some questions to text his listen skills. At last, teacher can ask him to retell the story by pretention. Also teacher should adjustments of tone, volume and pace of their speech in order to communicate clearly”(English developmental continuum, student learning, teaching resources, English, speaking and listen,2.5).resource using “the man who planted the tree.”

Third month

Jack will become pay attention to listen not only movies but also what teacher said. Also as he touch so many thoughts of writers. He can change back normal thoughts more or less.

4

Literacy

Make Jack keep prove all his literacy skills by using some resource. Also Jack learn the independent reading. ”Though independent reading, students learn how pleasurable reading is and, teacher hope, become lifelong reader”(Gail E. Tompkins, literacy for the 21st century, a balanced approach fifth edition, 2010,chapter1, principle 5, independent reading and writing. )

Jack is slowly becoming a student who knows how to study. Next step is keep practice.

Jack now knows how to study and interested in literacy learning.

By using the books which can be read and has the movie to be watched, jack can do some activities about speaking and writing. Resource using ”balloon farm” and “my place”.

Next three month

Jack will keep proving her literacy skills.

But in the VELS, by the end of year 3, students should get level 3, which progression point is 2.75. But as Jack is a very low literacy starter, I just need him to reach 2.5 in these months.

Reflection

As Jack is poor grammar student, the spelling words activity and finish the sentences activities are necessary put into the class for him.

Also Jack is a very easy absent-minded student. So teachers should pay more attention to him.

Because Jack is a student just has interesting to do the things he feels funny. So I decided to build up his interesting to reading first. As Jack loves sports, reading a story book about basketball may get a better start. Also he should have lots of own stories about basketball, they can be used in writing activities.

But we cannot only make student read what they interested. They have to learn gain the different information from different types of book. As Jack start reading the books, I choose a funny book, but may not the interesting topic what he liked.

Also students not only gain the information by reading, but also gain information by listening to others. Jack always not listens to teachers. So I make him watch movie first. Also he can do some speaking and writing practice after watching movie.

As Jack starts to listen and read, he can do normal literacy practice now. so I choose the book have the rich information inside.

Why this knowledge is important?

Literacy learning is English learning. A person who is not good at his or her mother language is so poor. English is the language which can support you to live in Australian.

“The study of English is central to the learning and development of all young Australians. It helps create confident communicators, imaginative thinkers and informed citizens. It is through the study of English that individuals learn to analyse, understand, communicate with and build relationships with others and with the world around them. The study of English helps young people develop the knowledge and skills needed for education, training and the workplace. It helps them become ethical, thoughtful, informed and active members of society. In this light it is clear that the Australian Curriculum: English plays an important part in developing the understanding, attitudes and capabilities of those who will take responsibility for Australia’s future.

Although Australia is a linguistically and culturally diverse country, participation in many aspects of Australian life depends on effective communication in Standard Australian English. In addition, proficiency in English is invaluable globally. The Australian Curriculum: English contributes both to nation-building and to internationalisation.

The Australian Curriculum: English also helps students to engage imaginatively and critically with literature to expand the scope of their experience. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have contributed to Australian society and to its contemporary literature and its literary heritage through their distinctive ways of representing and communicating knowledge, traditions and experience. The Australian Curriculum: English values, respects and explores this contribution. It also emphasises Australia’s links to Asia.” (The Australian curriculum English , English, rational)

'I have a dog. Nothing exotic or special, just an ordinary dog. In fact, I always thought he was a boring dog. What I mean is, he can fetch, roll over, and shake hands, but mostly he sleeps and eats.'
Or so the little boy in this story thinks, until one morning when he opens the door a little early and sees his dog jump out of a limousine. That night he decides to follow his dog, and that's when the fun starts.
Before he knows it, he has entered the little known world of doggy glamour. His dog, distinctly reminiscent of Humphrey Bogart, treats him to a nighttime adventure where he learns where dogs go to relax and sees what they do while their masters are fast asleep. A terrific read aloud, Nina Laden's story will have everyone captivated by the coolest dog around.
